Blackheath, and the adjacent Greenwich Park,
together comprise by far the largest open space in a very large area of
south-east London, including much of the north and east of Lewisham and
the west of Greenwich. Although Greenwich Park and Blackheath are
intensively managed, both contain features of wildlife interest, notably
the ancient parkland trees of the former and the ponds and pockets of
relict acid grassland of the latter; acid grassland is a rare habitat in
Lewisham. Their location makes these sites strategically important as the
nearest available place where a great many Londoners can experience green
landscapes, albeit in a highly-manicured form. |
